Talking with kids about climate change

1/20/2023

For the littlest ones (0-5)(and their parents), one of our favourite books is "Climate Change for Babies." While it may be too complex for small babies, I was happy to discover that after a few readings, my 3 year old was able to really grasp what climate change is about. (Watch this!) Each parent needs to decide how and when to introduce climate change to their little one. For my family, climate change was something we talked it about. It was as much a part of our lives as holidays, politics, and covid. As my little one grew, I felt his confidence in his understanding of climate change grow as well. He has ideas of how people should act, wants to make his voice heard, and seems ready to face the challenges. While I can't fix everything, I can share my knowledge and try to model helpful behaviours and responses.

For bigger kids in your life (ages 6-12), there's the: Kid's guide to climate change

This climate change guide comes complete with a printable comic.
Gabe lives in Colorado, and after experiencing a scare of a forest fire near his home, he develops a growing awareness of natural disasters which are happening due to climate change. Eventually he forms a club with like-minded school mates and finds hope in making personal lifestyle change and in pushing for larger emissions reducing projects locally.
